Oceanography Term:
Science of the ocean, as well as the lessons of current,
tides, current of air, geology of the seafloor, living organisms,

It is the study of oceans and seas. Oceanography
is the science of studying the sea. But why do humans who
live on the land want to spend their time investigating the
oceans? Because oceans play a big part in how we live our

The science of oceanography is rapidly growing, becoming
progressively complex as comprehensive hypothetical studies
of different oceanic facts are carried out and as more observations
become available to check and direct them.
Over two-thirds of the Earth's surface is covered by oceans
and play a vital part in life on Earth, pretty separate from
their own basic concern.
THE oceans form one of the fundamental divisions of the Earth's
surface and their volume is considerably greater than that
of the land above sealevel. Indeed, if all the inequalities
of the Earth were leveled off there would be enough water
in the oceans to cover the whole surface of the Earth to a
depth of about 8,600 ft. Most of the land lies fairly close
to sea-level, the mean height of the continents being 2,300
ft. above sealevel, while the oceans, on the other hand, have
their greatest area between 12,000 and 18,000 ft. below sea-level.
In fact, 41 per cent of the whole surface of the Earth lies
between the last two depths. It is worth noting that in terms
of the diameter of the globe, which is nearly 8,000 miles,
the relief features of the continents and oceans are relatively
insignificant. The highest mountains and greatest deeps are
only just over 65,000 ft. apart vertically; this is about
12.3 miles or ⅓30 of the radius. Nevertheless there
are very important differences between the structure and relief
of the ocean basins and the continental areas.
Of all the major units of the Earth's surface the Pacific
Ocean is the greatest, covering about half of the whole globe.
It also contains the largest single unit of truly oceanic
structure, although this is considerably smaller than the
aerial extent of the whole of the Pacific. Recent work has
given a much clearer picture of the nature and extent of the
major structural types within the oceans.
The circulation of the oceans is an important aspect of oceanography
from the geographical point of view; it helps to distribute
heat received in low latitudes to certain areas in higher
ones, with all this implies with regard to climatic modifications.
Conclusion
The subject of oceanography is so wide that it has not been
possible to do more than indicate some of the very interesting
fields which are now being actively explored. A few of the
ways in which the oceans influence and play their part in
human life on Earth have been briefly mentioned, but the interaction
of the oceans and the land are so intricately interwoven that
it is impossible to unravel all the threads. They play a part
on the Earth which is much greater than the attention normally
given to them would suggest, and exert an influence either
direct or indirect over the surface of the globe. Within them
are still hidden many secrets, but elaborate and detailed
research work is gradually revealing the unknown and fascinating
processes operating in the oceans, on their surface, at their
edge, where they meet the land, and on their floor.
