How To Write Native/Indian Studies Term Papers

The Chicago manual of style is most commonly used in this area of study. The Chicago Manual of Style comprises two general methods of documentation: a notes/bibliography system and an author-date system. The notes/ bibliography method includes information about the sources, as well as explanatory notes, in a section entitled "Notes." The "Bibliography" places the sources in alphabetical order. However, a bibliography is not mandatory in the case of relatively short essays. Therefore, and because the essays are self-contained, it was not considered necessary to have corresponding bibliographies for the "Notes" in each essay prepared according to the guidelines of The Chicago Manual of Style.

Those interested in Native Indian Studies face two challenges. The first, a difficulty posed by any new area of knowledge, is the need to master the content of the subject. Given the historical context of hundreds of tribes and a myriad of languages, one cannot hope to become expert in the many cultures that have made up the Native Indian world, at least in one college career. Students may feel burdened by the two, five, or seven books assigned in a course. Yet, the professor often feels the weight of responsibility to teach the material, and wonders, "How can I get across all the important and interesting things there are to know about this area with only two (or five or seven) books?" The problem of content is compounded by the false assumptions many non-Native Indians bring to their study. Native Indians are not the mythical, one-dimensional figures of conventional films and stories. The pragmatism of American Indian life confront straightforward typecasting, arraying as they do from the domineering poverty found on many suspicions to the triumphant tactical scheduling of Indian casinos to the thrilling originality of Native Indian literature.

The second challenge Native Indian Studies presents to students is its interdisciplinary nature. Native Studies draws upon the expertise and knowledge of many distinct disciplines, such as economics, education, history, literature, museum studies, popular culture, and religion. Each of these disciplines champions its particular set of questions and concerns, approaches and strategies, tools and techniques, goals and objectives. The difficulty of learning a variety of approaches to knowing the world can be daunting for the student, particularly if precedent educational meetings highlight "the particulars" over the course of how historians, economists, or literary scholars go about their work.

Despite the challenges of content and process, the effort to come to terms with the many aspects of the Native Indian experience is rewarding. The contributors to this volume hope that, after you have immersed yourself in their essays, you come away enriched. We believe this collection will endow you with greater insight into both academic endeavor and the lives of the First Americans. Their experience is that of a people who shaped--and who continue to influence--the development of American society; their lives demonstrate, as well, the indefatigable power human beings summon to surmount great obstacles, both natural and man-made.
