A complete guide for the MLA format.

The works cited list provides information necessary for the instructor to locate and be able to read any sources you parenthetically cite within the body of your writing. EVERY source you directly quote or paraphrase must appear on your works cited page.

Here are some basic instructions:

  • The works cited list should appear at the end of your essay; click on format; click on paragraph; click on line spacing; change spacing to double; click OK.
  • Center the words Works Cited in a Times New Roman 12 point font; NO “quotation marks”; NO underlining; NO italics; NO bold; No bigger than the Works Cited entries, and NO extra spaces between title and entries.
  • Make the first entry flush with the left margin of the page. Each line that follows needs to be indented 5 spaces or 1 inch. This is called a hanging indent.
  • Alphabetize the list of works cited by the first word in each entry (usually the author’s last name when available).

Here is the format for the types of sources you will be using throughout the year:

Books

Author(s). Title of Book. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication.

Magazine or newspaper article

Author(s). “Title of Article.” Title of Newspaper/Magazine Day Month Year: pages.

Website

Author(s). Name of Page. Date of Posting/Revision. Name of institution/organization

Affiliated with the site. Date of Access .

Article on a Website

Author(s). “Article Title.” Name of website. Date of posting/revision. Name of

nstitution/organization affiliated with site. Date of access .

Personal Interview

Last name of interview subject, first name. Personal Interview. Date Month Year.

Survey

Name(s) of creator(s) of survey. “Title of Survey.” Location Distributed.

Date of distribution (Date Month Year).
