The middle Ages or Medieval times is usually categorized and addressed separately. This is because each region may have been influenced differently during the same period. Medieval Times in Western Europe is known to date from 5th century, which marks approximately the end of the Western Roman Empire. These times are known to have lasted till the rising of national monarchies and the beginning of European overseas exploration. In addition to these events or changes that were taking place, there were other significant movements taking place that included: the humanist revival, and Protestant Reformation starting in during the 1500s. It can be observed here that there were several significant changes occurring during these times on the political and even religious fronts. It must be said that the religious fronts may have been largely political ones as well, as has been reflected so often throughout history.

Barbarian conflict was largely a part of the Western European territories. Many of the tribal confederations were rejects of the classical Roman culture. Other tribes were the Goths, and they were known for being taken up with classical Roman culture. This admiration was so much that they even considered themselves to be heirs of Rome. In addition the Barbarians and the Goths were the Huns, Avars, Magyars, Germanic and even Slavic peoples.

While Western Europe had its share of conflict with many tribes, Eastern Europeans thought that they were the heirs to the Roman legacy. Their political views and their religious views were believed to be more correct in their own way of thinking. This refers to their own Christian views in contrast to the Catholic views of the western part.

With regard to significant changes taking place in medieval times, there were even environmental ones taking place. It was known that for a long time during the medieval period, the climatic conditions had been fairly warm. Towards the latter part though it had been determined that the climatic conditions were worsening. This period is sometimes referred to as the ‘Little Ice Age’.

The Black Death that took place during medieval times was yet another feature of this historic period. A significant number of people were wiped out in Europe because of this, and along with economic conditions that were in bad shape the medieval period was quite gloomy.

Coming down from these dire economic conditions, it is said that during medieval times in Western Europe, cheap labor was scarce. This drove landowners into competition for peasants. It is thought that the wages and freedoms that resulted from this competition were the roots of the capitalism we see today.

Aside from the surprising features that we have come to know about medieval times, it must be asserted that entertainment such as music is also intriguing. This is because names of composers who composed several brilliant pieces are unknown. This is because they did not attach their names to their compositions. However, some of them that are known along with other historical figures of this period include Abbess Hildegard von Bingen and Perotin Magnus.
