Sculpture has been a form of artistic expression for centuries and may represent the human body or may depict other life forms. Many artists consider this as a more versatile medium as it does not have the monotony of being one-dimensional. Sculpture has evolved through the ages and has diversified into many forms from the abstract to the realist. Among the many names to gain recognition as a sculptor one of them is that of Judy Fox.

Judy Fox was born in New Jersey during 1957. Her interest in art saw her taking a degree from the Skowhegan School of Painting plus Sculpture during 1976. 2 years after during 1978 she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University. In the same year she was awarded the Jonathon Edwards Arts gift. She furthered her learning by getting her masters degree form the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University in the year 1983.

Judy Fox Art & Architecture has been publicized a lot of places spanning a time period starting since 1977. Noteworthy among these are Yale University Art and Architecture Gallery, Carlo Lamagna Gallery, New York; and The Jewish Museum Washington DC. Internationally her work has been exhibited in France, Norway, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. A number of these have been solo exhibitions. She has also been part of the faculty at Yale, Tyler school of Art and Middlebury College. Judy’s love of travel and subsequent exposure to a wide variety of cultures finds reflections in her work and makes them more interesting. Her work first grabbed attention in the 1980’s when she made images of life size toddlers and babies. Her babies shave distinctly spooky feel about them as the give the impression of being alive and dead at the same time. Almost all her figures have a certain darkness about them that gives the onlooker a particularly eerie feeling. She sculpts her figures using live models and also photographs especially in the case of children as she says it is impossible to have them hold still for long. Even tough her work has its basis in realism it still has factious undertone such as those found in mythological stories.

Her major medium is fired clay with fine intonations of hand painting, which are responsible for the life like quality of her figures. This why her sculptures do not have the mask like look found in other artists work. She starts building up her figures from the feet using terracotta and a steel armature. It is during the building process that she fires them. After completion she gives them a thin glaze of casein in layers that remains transparent so that the colors beneath show through it. The human form in her figures is so accurately molded that it gives the impression of being cast.
