Abstract
There are not many facts regarding the purpose of obedience when committing evil actions as of now (1961).  According to the majority of the theories, terrible actions are usually performed by people who are too disturbed and that too only when they are asked to do so. In our experiment, obedience of people was tested against the authorities. As per the results, orders are mostly obeyed when issued by the authority. The bottom line is that situations play a significant role and it is the situation which causes one person to hurt the other.

Introduction
The theories in this contemporary period of time mostly emphasize upon personal character traits to give an explanation for wrong-doing and to clarify how one individual can hurt the other one on purpose. According to one survey, professionals like doctors, engineers and laymen believed that only about 1 to 3 percent of the entire population would hurt their fellows on somebody’s order.

In the recent war trial of Adolph Eichmann, he acknowledges that he ‘only have been following orders’. The author wished to discover if this was correct or was just claimed for the sake of an apt explanation. Do people really obey orders and harm others? Can kindhearted people also stop to this level?

The experiment will examine if a person is really capable of causing pain to the other individual just because of somebody’s instructions. The belief is that majority of the people will not follow such instructions and only few people will obey the order and give electric shocks to the other person.

Methods

Participants
There were a total of 40 male participants who were appointed through an advertisement in the newspaper and charged $4.50 for the services they offered.

Instruments

A ‘shock generator’ was employed to give participants the impression that they were giving electrical shocks to the individuals present in the other room. The shock generator, which was being used, had various switches which were labeled according to their voltages. Every switch’s minimum voltage was 30 volts which kept increasing with the difference of 15 volts and went as high as 450 volts. The labels on the switches also informed the participants about the harm which can be caused by a particular voltage.

Procedures

Every participant got a chance to meet the other participant, in the waiting room, before the experiment was carried out. One participant was supposed to be the ‘learner’ while the other one had to play the role of a ‘teacher’. It was the ‘teacher’s’ duty to give a shock every time the ‘learner’ gave an incorrect answer to a question. The ‘teacher’ thought that the electric shocks being delivered were real although they were not.

The ‘leaner’ was a confederate who faked getting the shocks by the ‘teacher’. As the experiment continued, the ‘learners’ would beg their ‘teachers’ to set them free, they would plead and hurt themselves to get released. The ‘learner’ then, eventually, stopped answering the questions spewed upon him and chose to stay totally quiet. The experiment then required the ‘teacher’ to consider silence as another incorrect answer and continue delivering the electric shocks.

Results
Out of the lot of 40 male participants, 26 were able to give the maximum number of shocks while the remaining 14 stopped following instructions before they got to the highest level. However, all the participants delivered shocks of more than 300 volts.

Discussion/ Conclusion
Majority of the participants were outraged at the experimenter, however, many of them kept listening to the experimenter although they did not want to. Hence, this study demonstrates that people are capable of hurting other when they are asked to do so.
